They definitely help
My vest including dinner plates and crayon holders is along the lines of 37-40 lbs. The stock shoulder pads are non-existent making the carrier border on unbearable. I ordered these, they were shipped out quickly and with basic USPS delivery I had them in a week or less. They easily installed on my existing carrier (assuming you know how velcro works). They make the vest wearable for long period of time with minimal discomfort. So two recommendations, first go for light weight plates, and second if that's not an option (or even if it is) get a set of these as they do help.

Very Comfortable
I ordered these for my plate carrier, because I went from an occasional wearing to a nearly daily use. It makes it so much easier to bear the weight of the steel plates. I’m impressed with these.

Comfort for hours
These made all the difference when wearing my Grey Ghost Gear Minimalist PC. The straps would dig into my shoulders something awful, but not any more. I can wear my rig for hours with no pain!
